CHAPTER 19

THE NOTORIOUS AND GLORIOUS RAZ DEFAN

We were surrounded by pirates the second we stepped onto the gravitated and oxygenated deck of the Angel’s Star. Fortunately, after my squad had stopped gaping when I told them my father was the Raz Defan, they had believed me that bringing weapons up would be pointless, so at least we didn’t look like a threat.

The men around us struck an odd mix of better dressed than the Screamers gang, but less uniform than the EA. Some had on tri-horn hats and stained smocks, other plain old jeans. Their weapons were just as varied as their choice of clothing. If the Screamers had traditional weapons, then Raz Defan’s gang had a goodie grab bag. There were energy rifles, propulsed slugs, machine guns that used actual metal bullets, and even a couple of cutlasses, with plasma imbued in the blades.

A man stepped across the wooden deck towards us and pointed an energy cutlass at my throat. His face was covered in bright metal studs that ran all the way up to his shiny bald head.

“A greetin’ to ya all. My name is Studs, and I welcome you aboard our luxury liner. Ask ya kindly to put yer hands up. We won’t be wanting anybody to get hurt, would we?”

The men around him shifted their rifles menacingly. I slowly put my hands up. My squad did the same.

“So you want our Chips, too?” I wagered.

Studs shook his head. His cutlass stayed rigid at my throat. “Bah! Too much trouble, they are. Not worth gettin’ hounded across the whole slagging galaxy for a small profit.”

Jess looked up at the mast and riggings, to the snarling nest of ropes and pulleys crisscrossing the main deck. “So is Raz Defan here, or are we all going to stand around looking like idiots?”

Studs shot an impatient look towards the closed wooden door of the main cabin, elevated above the deck we stood on. “Raz Defan answers when he wishes. He’s not to be hurried by the likes of fugitives such as yourselves.”

“Funny coming from you guys,” Killian muttered.

I said loudly, “Maybe he’ll hurry up to see Alyx Starburn, what do you say, Studs?”

Studs eyed me shrewdly, like a jeweler trying to see if a diamond was a fake. A couple of the men shared confused looks. Some approached me to get a better look, and I resisted shrinking back as the muzzles of their guns came a little too close to my face.

Studs suddenly gasped. “Great sea stars,” he whispered. “Wee Alyx? T’was just a child…Raz suspected it was you we’s found, but I had my doubts…” He turned more quickly back to the cabin and practically yelled, “Though Raz Defan wishes to see his son, he would never present himself in any less than his finest—”

An immaculately stitched leather boot kicked the cabin door open and out strode my father, the notorious Raz Defan, in all his…ah, glory, I guess. Studs tried not to laugh as my dad strode towards us.
